Maryland law allows you to decide whether to purchase electricity supply from your utility or a licensed retail electricity supplier (energy choice).
Benefits to customers may include:
In a competitive market, some suppliers may offer rates below the utility’s Standard Offer Service (or default) rate, typically expressed as cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This could save you money on your monthly energy bill.
Some suppliers offer a portion of all of their electricity from ‘clean’ sources such as solar or wind and are considered more environmentally-friendly.
Some suppliers offer rewards for enrolling, such as gift cards, airline miles, etc. You will need to decide if these incentives, combined with the supplier’s rate, are a good choice for your budget.
If you switch, your utility will continue to deliver your electricity, and respond to outage problems. The quality, reliability, and maintenance of your electric service will not change and will continue to be monitored and regulated by the PSC.
